ROLL OUT Results // Feature Player of the Week

posted Dec 1, 2016, 6:39 PM by Slim Shadow

The Gas City Roller Derby Association was busy on November 12th as we had ourselves a good ol' fashioned doubleheader as the Pilot Lights took on the Windy City Wipeouts from Lethbridge, and the Gas City Regulators Rolled Out against the Rocky View Rebelles. It was a wild night of derby, so let's get right to it.

First off were the Pilot Lights taking on the Wipeouts. The jammers were fast, the scoring was high, and all the juniors were having smiles on their faces. But it was a competition and there had to be a winner, the Gas City Pilot Lights came away with the 266-219 win.

Then it was on to the main event as the Gas City Regulators took on the Rocky View Rebelles. Gas City jammer Evil Twin transferred over to the Rocky View side to make a more balanced team. The jams were fast paced, the blockers were hard hitting, and it was a competitive match that came down to the last jam. In that last jam, it was nearly tied, but once Rocky View's jammer incurred a penalty, the Gas City Regulators capitalized by scoring 20 points in that powerjam to take the game with a 146-126 tally.

We would like to thank all of the refs and NSOs that helped out on both games, also to the opposing teams that made it here to play derby, and also to those attending.

Next match will be December 10th as the Pilot Lights take on the Highway 14 Speedbumps from Wainwright and the Regulators take on Nuclear Free Roller Derby Boom.

Feature Player of the Week

GCRDA is starting something up on their Facebook page called Feature Player of the Week, in which we feature a Gas City Roller, Pilot Light, and support staff like our refs, NSO's, and coaches each week. So if you're not following us on Facebook, then do so right now. Our first featured player is Regulators captain and Pilot Lights coach Bashin' Bindi.

Hello, Derby folks. I got lots to update you on so hold on tight:

First off, the Gas City Roller Derby Association debuted next door at the Cypress Centre Fieldhouse a few weeks ago, and it was a doubleheader with the Pilot Lights taking on the Ra-Ra-Riots. The match was a high scoring affair as both teams' jammers were speeding past the pack, but when it was all said and done, the Pilot Lights came away with the 302-205 victory.

Next was the main event as the Gas City Regulators took on the Redneck Betties in the second of a home-at-home series between the two teams. Gas City wanted to get themselves some revenge after that defeat a couple of weeks ago. It was certainly close and high energy, but once the clock hit zero, the Redneck Betties manage to squeak past the Regulators 174-150.

We would like to thank all of the volunteers, refs, and NSO's for taking their time to making this match happen. Without you there would be no match. As well, we would like to thank the fans and sponsors. Roller derby costs money and thanks to you guys, we can give to you hard hitting roller derby action.
Live Free Skate Hard

Several Gas City Rollers, Pilot Lights, and a few NSO's took part in the 2016 Live Free Skate Hard invitational in Lethbridge, Alberta. There was plenty of interesting events that happened: The Co-Ed bout featured Gas City's own Bashin Bindi and Dodger Balls as they were on opposite sides. Phaye-Tality added to her experience as she partook in both the Rookie and Advanced bouts, and the Pilot Lights' own Hawabunga having fun with other junior players. Also there there was TimTation and Slym Shadow rocking Team NSO and Dodger Balls doing his part with Team Zebra. All in all, good times, and great games were had. Thanks, Lethbridge. Can't wait until next year.

Gas City Remembers

On behalf of GCRDA, we would like to thank all military service men and women for making their sacrifice for us on this Remembrance Day. Without our military, we probably will not have this wonderful and empowering sport of roller derby, and other things that make this country awesome. For those that have served and are serving, thank you.

Swift Current Games Results // First Home Game

posted Sep 27, 2016, 11:50 AM by Slim Shadow

Hey all.

In the good ol' neighbouring town of Swift Current, SK, there was certainly a hubbub as there was a doubleheader featuring not only one but two roller derby matches. First, there was Gas City's own Pilot Lights as they made the trek down the Highway 1 to compete against Swift Current's Ra-Ra Riots. The Pilot Lights fought hard against the Riots and it paid off for them as they went on to the 235-193 victory.

And it was on to the second match as the Gas City Regulators also traveled to Speedy Creek to take on the Redneck Betties. The Regulators made it close and exciting for the Swift Current crowd, but unfortunately the Regulators fell to a 173-125 defeat.

Fortunately, all four of these teams will be in the Hat this weekend as GCRDA presents Block of Ages
Saturday October 1. Also keep in note, we have officially moved next door to the Cypress Centre Fieldhouse. We have a bigger area for more fans and bigger possibilities. So bring your $10 and get ready for a pair rockin' rematches.

Fall Brawl Results // Games Coming Up // Skater Training Program

Hey Derby Fans:

It's been a fun weekend full of roller derby action, as the Gas City Rollers took part in the 8-team clash at Wainwright known as Fall Brawl II. They were short-handed for the event, only fielding a team of 9 players. Their first draw was an early morning match against a team called the Energetic City Kill Billies who traveled all the way from Fort St. John, BC to participate. The action was intense and fierce from both ends, but in the end it came down to blocking, as they knocked our jammers silly as the Kill Billies advance with the 189-109 victory.

But our tournament wasn't over by any means. We still had to get through the 3rd place bracket. Their first challenge was the East Side Wheelers representing Indus. We were able to hand out a clobbering for our second match as the Rollers rolled away with the 201-60 win.

Next up was an early Sunday morning bout against the hosts of the tournament, Wainwright's own Highway 14 Steamrollers. Even though it was an early morning match for the girls, as they were tired and bruised from the day before, they were able to speed past the Steamrollers with the 169-76 victory.

And with that win, they advanced to the 3rd place finals against the Battlefords' Rubby Rollers. It was an intense back-and-forth matchup between the two. They exchanged blows and lead jams and all manners of derby-ness. It all came down to the last jam: Gas City was leading by a few points. All they had to do was get lead jam and run down the clock and the game was over. But the Rubby Rollers get lead jam and were able to get points against Gas City with a 5-point pass with Gas City unable to get through their initial pass. They had to get something going in order to catch up, but the jam was called off once the clock ran to zero. The Rubby Rollers take the metaphorical bronze with the 139-133 win over our Gas City rollers.

And if you are curious as to who the winner was of the whole she-bang? It was our first round opponent, the Energetic City Kill Billies who got the prize over OCRD's Dirty Harriets with a 213-137 victory.

Our thanks go out to all of our opponents and all the rest of the teams that participated. Not only that, but to all of the officials and volunteers who made this tournament a success. And lastly to the wonderful town of Wainwright for being wonderful hosts. Can't wait to see you all next year.

Games Coming Up

And with that, we also have some games coming up in the near future, actually this Saturday as the Gas City Regulators heads east on the Highway 1 to take on Swift Current's Redneck Betties.

We also have our first half of the season ready to go on our Schedule. Please keep in mind that the schedule is subject to change, but the dates will still be there.

Skater Training Program

With another season comes another batch of brave individuals willing to take on the sport that we all love: Roller derby. Could you be one of those individuals? We would like to invite you to this great sport of roller derby. We'll teach you how to skate, fall, hit and take hits, whip, assist, and all-around learn what this sport has to offer. Come in on Sunday September 25 at 2:00 PM at the Cypress Centre with five dollars, your health card, and a mouth guard so you can take your first steps to becoming a Gas City Roller. And it doesn't matter what gender you are. GCRDA is a co-ed group.

Hellz Jezebel Memorial Result // Flat Track Fever Info // E-Waste Roundup

posted Jun 8, 2016, 9:40 PM by Slim Shadow

Hey Derby Fans:

Around a month ago, Gas City took part in the Hellz Jezebel Memorial Tournament in Lethbridge. It was a long weekend for the girls in green, so let's start from the beginning.

Gas City's first game was up against the Rocky View Rebelles from Airdrie. It was a hard fought match, but Gas City came away with the 203-134 victory.

Their second game was up against Indus' East Side Wheelers. The game was less of a challenge as they took the match easily to the tune of 199-130.

They were off to the second day of action. After they had their night of sleep, they were ready to fight for the title. Their first bout was a rematch versus the Rebelles. There was an unfortunate injury to Rebelles player Friggen Diggens, and due to that, the Rocky View Rebelles forfeited their match against Gas City. They were leading 87-46 at the time of the injury.

And then there were two teams: The Redneck Betties from Swift Current, SK have paved their way to the finals by first defeating the host Deathbridge Derby Dames and East Side Wheelers to get to the coveted position to taking the title. They have shown how tough they were throughout the tournament in the final match. They were hitting hard, and we hit hard as well in this physical chess match. The game was very tight, but Gas City pulled away and Won the Championship by a score of 184-157.

Huge thanks to the Dames for hosting a wonderful tournament and to the City of Lethbridge for its hospitality. Thanks to the Refs, NSO's, volunteers, and of course the teams that made the tournament a great success.

Flat Track Fever

However, Gas City withdrew themselves from Flat Track Fever over a roster issue. Gas City would like to congratulate the Rated PG Northstars from Prince George, BC, for winning the Calgary tournament.

E-Waste Roundup

The Gas City Rollers, Regulators, and Pilot Lights took part in the E-Waste Roundup May 7 at the Stampede Grounds. All the girls worked hard taking all of your electronics and getting it all recycled. Plus, we had some fun doing it as well.

Though the Gas City Rollers had their finale at Hellz, the Regulators have one game to go as they take on the Deathbridge Derby Dames in Lethbridge's Exhibition Park. The game will be on June 11th and the first whistle will be at 7:00 PM. If you're feeling like taking the pilgrimage over to Lethbridge for the match, we would love to have a cheering section.

The Gas City Rollers will be taking part in their AGM where we will elect new members of our board and talk about key issues for the club. I know it's all boring board stuff, but it has to be done to deliver you great Gas City Roller Derby action.

Hey, Everybody!

It was a month full of fun not only for us but for our fans as well.

First off, we had our Triple Header last Saturday at the Cypress Centre, as first we had our junior Pilot Lights taking on their western rivals Udder Annihilation. It was a hard fought contest filled with hard walls and sweet jammer action, but when it was all said and done, the Pilot Lights came out with the 389-272 victory over Udder Annihilation.

Next up, was the Gas City Regulators taking on a pick-up team that have dubbed themselves the "Storm Troopers" Their jammers were fast, and even despite their namesake, their hits were hard and accurate. They were too much to handle, and they Imperial Cruise to a 132-114 victory.

Then it was the Main Event: The Gas City Rollers were prepped and ready to take on the Honey Badgers from Swift Current. The badgers entered the building ready for a fight, they fought well and hard but the Force was with the Rollers as they went on to beat the badgers to the tune of 186-129.

We would like to thank our fans and sponsors for supporting us and watching the game, and also to the Honey Badgers and Udder Annihilation who are the Sith to our Jedi. and to all the Storm Troopers for coming out, joining forces, and whooping our booties. And without our Referees and NSO's this couldn't be possible. Thank you all, for making these matches happen.

Also, congratulations go out to Darren Jacques for winning our basket full of booze and Harley Davidson merch. Thank you for supporting roller derby.

Roller Derby 101

The Sunday after the match, we opened up to people who wanted to learn more about roller derby, and probably do a skate around. Though they started out like Bambi on ice, soon they'll get used to their skates and sooner or later, they will join the ranks of the best derby team in town. And if you still want to get a piece of the action, Come to one of our Fresh Meat practices. Sunday afternoons at 1:30 PM in either the Curling Club or the Cypress Centre. Check the Schedule for more details.

Tigers Table

On March 9, The Medicine Hat Tigers invited the Gas City Rollers to promote their game and Fresh Meat Intake and also sell tickets for our Harley Davidson basket raffle. There were plenty of Tigers fans that were there and we had extra fun talking sports and derby with each and every one of you. So from Gas City to the Tigers, thank you very much, and we'll look forward to working with you next season.

And if you want to know, the Tigers were playing the Prince Albert Raiders and won 4-3. Go Tigers Go.

Coming Up...

The Rollers and Regulators are taking a bit of a break this season as the Rollers prep for two tournaments in May as the Rollers will compete in Hellz Jezebel Memorial Tournament in Lethbridge, and later on that month, Flat Track Fever! The grandest roller derby tournament in the province. We're looking forward to whooping ass in May.

As for our Pilot Lights, they go on the road to Swift Current to take on the Ra Ra Riots on April 23.

We Are Officially Launched!

Hey, everybody. It's been a long time since Joel put me in charge of building a brand spanking new website for the league, and here we are today with a new layout and new features. So have a lookie-round and tell me what you think. On to a few announcements:

First off, we have an intake coming up on March 27. We are looking for Players, Referees, and NSO's to come join our ranks. It takes place at the Curling Club at 1:00 PM. Enter on the west entrance, close to the police station. Come prepared, though, with a mouthguard, $5 drop in fee, and your health card number.

And to promote this intake, we will be at a Medicine Hat Tigers game on Wednesday March 9 as they take on the Prince Albert Raiders. So come out to the game and say hi, and maybe buy some merch.

But before intake, we have a Tripleheader on March 24 as we present SKATE WARS: The Pack Awakens. First off will be our Junior team the Pilot Lights taking on Udder Annihilation, and the Regulators facing off against an alliance of Stormtrooper rollergirls, and the main event, Your Gas City Rollers taking on the Honey Badgers from Swift Current. First match starts at 3 PM, Regulators at 5, ant the Main Event at 7. Bring your friends and family to see some high octane roller derby action.

EDIT: The Beta got more open just today as we just tied this new site to our domain name. So read everything below and let us know if there's anything wrong. Official launch March 1st.

Welcome, everybody to the new website.

I have been working hard on this website, and today is a landmark day as we start this phase of the new website called Open Beta.

Now what is Open Beta? Well, Beta, in software terms, means that a certain software, or in this case website, is in a stage where it's good, but it needs to be tested. And that's where you come in. I want you to test out the website and find any bugs with the site. If you find anything, go to the Contact page, select "BETA" as your subject, and write down the problem, and I'll fix the problem as soon as I can.

Also, keep in mind that this site is also designed to be MOBILE FRIENDLY, so make sure to test the websites on your phones and tablets.

Thanks very much and happy bug hunting.
