From the bowels of Alberta where the poet Rudyard Kipling proclaimed the land had “all hell for a basement” a group of women joined powers in 2008- fired up for a collective passion- roller derby. It was that year Medicine Hat’s premiere all girl roller derby league – the Gas City Rollers – were born.
After a haphazard meeting at a local pub, other like minded ladies jumped into action skating the outdoor rinks from Strathcona Park to Margaret Wooding Elementary School. Soon the association was officially born, the Medicine Hat Skateboard Association took them under their wing, an indoor venue was found and the original members held a recruitment drive pushing membership to thirty.
Now the gals can be found skating the hallowed halls of the Cypress Centre Pavillion – weekly, training, strengthening their quad skating skills, learning the rules of the game and building a community-minded organization that hopes to make a difference in the future. Gas City Rollers have fundraised for many of Medicine Hat’s non-profit associations as part of the associations community fundraising initiatives! We want to give back — and have to Canadian Cancer Society, Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Parkinson Alberta Society and the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society! In 2012 we plan to work with the SPCA and Medicine Hat & District Food Bank to give back to the community.
